Barley and Candied Winter Melon Drink
My Mom used to make this whenever we start eating too many fried food and believe that we need to cool off our body. Don’t ask me if it works or not, we just kind of accept that it works. But the better question would be, is it tasty? And to that, I would wholeheartedly give a resounding YES, it is super yummy. ♥
Barley and Candied Winter Melon Drink
Ingredients
- 100 gram barley (Indonesian: jali), washed and drained a couple of times
- 125 gram candied winter melon (Indonesian: baligo/beligo/kundur)
- 3 pandan leaves, washed and knotted
- 3 liter water
- sugar (optional), to taste
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hour until barley is soft.
- Taste if it is sweet enough, usually it is, but you can add more sugar if you prefer a sweeter drink.
- Turn off heat. Can be served hot, at room temperature, or chilled.

May I ask what is wintermelon in bahasa indo? Thank u.
Anita says:
Hi Jesslyn, winter melon is called beligo, baligo, or kundur in Indonesian.
Maria Teresa Penafiel says:
Are pandan leaves optional since I don't have them on hand.tia
Anita says:
Hi Maria, it should be okay to omit pandan leaves, but the drink will be less fragrant compared to the one with pandan leaves. Barley and candied winter melon on their own don't have much aroma to them. I would try adding some freshly grated orange zest (from 1 orange) in the end, or cook the drink with a piece of dried orange peel. It will be different, but at least it will have some fragrance to it.
